New Executives

Hi everyone!

Today we had our elections for the treasurer and armourer positions on the UBC Fencing Club executive committee. I would like to introduce you all to our newest executives! Yvonne Chang is our new treasurer, and Eloi Mercier is our new armourer! Hurray!!!! Also, special thanks to Karl who now our equipment coordinator!

Elections this Thursday!!!

Hi all ya'll,

this Thursday we are having our elections for the Treasurer and Armourer positions. If you plan on running, please let us know (email us at fencingubc@gmail.com), and meet us 10 minutes before the lesson starts.

Here are the rules:

1) you must be a UBC student
2) you have to make a 1 minute speech --> Make sure to include who you are (so people can write down your name), why you want to do it, why you think you would be good at it, and if you have time maybe a bit about yourself.

There are many perks to being on the fencing exec. The first is that it looks great on your resume to have a leadership role like this. The second that you get lots of organizational experience, and essentially help run a business. The third is that you get to have free fencing lessons starting next semester (not including the summer semesters).

If you are not running, please do come on Thursday so you can vote! You do have a say on who represents you, the club member!

Over and out,

Jessica Clayton
UBC Fencing Club Secretary

Slash and Stab Tournament: Sunday October 23rd, 2011

Hi everyone!

We are having our annual Slash and Stab Halloween tournament. Epee and Sabre people, this means you, on Sunday October 23rd! So far the men and women events are separate.

You will need your up to date CFF and BCFA licence to compete. For those who do not have their CFF and BCFA licenses, or need to renew them, you can get them together here: CFF Licences

You can register on AskFred, and read any additional information or requirements here: Slash and Stab 2011 Ask Fred

*Please note that there is a field that says "USFA Member Number", but please leave it blank.*
**Pre-registration closes: Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 6:00 PM.**

For those unable to compete, or who have never seen a tournament, we encourage you to come by! It is very educational, in that you see how pools work, how the tournament is structured, and you can meet other fencers from around the lower mainland.

Would anyone like to volunteer with the set-up or take-down on Sunday morning? Just email us at fencingubc@gmail.com if you can :)

Thanks so much, and we hope to see you there!

Club Elections - Monday, March 7, 2011

Hi everyone,

It's that time of year again. We will be having our club elections on Monday, March 7, 2011, at 8:00 pm in the SUB Ballroom. The elections will happen first so we can get that out of the way before fencing practice starts. We urge you all to come out and vote! We need at least 15 members to count as a quorum (for voting purposes)!!!

These are the executive positions available:
President
Vice-President
Treasurer
Secretary
Social Coordinator
Armourer

We will be accepting nominations until March 6 at 10:00 pm. Please email us as soon as possible if you want to run for a position! :)

Note that you will need to provide a speech on why we should vote for you! :)
Minimum 30 seconds, maximum 2 minutes.

Please take the time to think about whether you might be interested in running for an executive position. Note that you can only run for one position BUT you are allowed to be nominated for more than one position in the event you do not get voted and chosen. You can nominate yourself or someone can nominate you for that position. Another thing to note is that you HAVE to be a UBC student next year (both semesters - September 2011 to April 2012) to run for a position, no exceptions...if you are graduating in November 2011, then you obviously cannot run for an executive position. Also, running a club and being an executive is good for your resume! :)

Here is a brief summary of the duties:
President - calls and chairs all meetings, coordinates all business of the club, act as liaison to AMS, Student Administrative Commission (SAC), BC Fencing Association and Canadian Fencing Federation (CFF)
Vice-President - helps President call/chair meetings if President is not present, help act as club liaison, help President with coordinating and running of the club...sort of like a right hand man
Treasurer - handles the finances of the club, and act as one of the two bookings representatives of the club
Secretary - records, keeps and takes minutes of all meetings
Social Coordinator - organizes social (non-tournament) events (e.g. dinners, bowling nights, laser tag, food outings, movie socials)
Armourer - repairs all club equipment

In terms of executive meetings, we usually have it once a month.

If you have any questions regarding elections or if you want to learn more about what an executive does, feel free to approach any of the executives and ask!

No fencing on January 24 and 27th

Hi everyone,

There will be NO FENCING next week - Monday, January 24 and Thursday, January 27, 2011 - fencing is CANCELLED. There are no rooms available in the SUB for us to book...so we can't really do any fencing! We apologize for the inconvenience. Looks like there is going to be a bunch of events including a career fair expo happening next week, hence why all the rooms have been booked.

Armoury day - Monday, January 17, 2011

Hi everyone,

Our club armourer, Seino, is doing another Armoury Day on Monday, January 17, 2011, upstairs in the SUB at 7:00 pm. We'll be at the couches near room 214/216 fixing electric equipment.

If you have any broken electric weapons or if you don't know what's wrong with them, bring your weapons and he'll have a look at it to see what's wrong.

If you are competing in the upcoming CSCs on January 28-30, you should come to Armoury Day to make sure all of your electric equipment is working.

If you would like to come, please RSVP by emailing us. See you there!
